This completely renovated 200-year-old house, which originally belonged to a village winemaker, is the owners' second home -- perfect for self-catering holidays in the non-peak seasons. The large, three-level village house has all the amenities anyone would expect for daily life - and more - (Stairway to Heaven?)

including a cave (wine cellar), a jardin with lavender and grapevines, a petite piscine (swimming pool), and a covered terrace with an unobstructed view of the Provençal countryside. Ceiling fans, fuel-fired central heating (VERY important for off-season rentals -- it actually can get a bit cold in winter, EVEN in this world-renowned temperate climate), dishwasher, washing machine, satellite television, garage parking for one small car, and traditional tomettes (hexagonal terra cotta tiles) throughout. Firm, comfortable beds. Ample cookware and dishware.

This large home is a charming, easy-living place... four sizable bedrooms plus a smaller room off the pool on the ground floor that is a sitting room/guest room.

The house can sleep eight to nine people privately and comfortably. Yet just two will feel cozy, as well. There are three toilets and shower-rooms/bathrooms (one on each level). Two of the upstairs bedrooms have charming private sinks!

Out the front door: a busy agricultural village; out the back, the serenity of the Provençal countryside. Truly, this home offers the best of both worlds: land and fresh air as well as the conveniences and company of an actual village.

The land behind the house drops off into a river, and a communal path leads to the river's edge and a nearby waterfall. Villagers maintain bountiful gardens to the edge of the river. The surrounding countryside is filled with vineyards.... great biking, kayaking, walking, etc. are within steps. Listen to the waterfall when enjoying meals on the terrace.

You will be living in working village. Within steps are boulangeries, small shops, cafes, (most surprisingly) a sophisticated contemporary art gallery, small markets, pharmacies, butchers, banks, post office, five wineries (in town), a traditional Saturday market, and a charming village of around 2500 people who actually like having visitors to their town.

You can be as isolated as you wish yet still stroll to the Presse to pick up the Herald-Tribune, then across the street to the café for coffee and a croissant. Daily fresh bread, of course, is right around the corner. Two small groceries and two fresh vegetable stores are steps away. On the outskirts of town is a larger supermarket if you feel the need for a stock-up. Even larger stores are in Brignoles, about 20 minutes away.

Carcès and other picturesque villages nearby offer lively, engaging cultural activities on a regular basis. Music concerts in medieval buildings, art openings, flea markets in village squares, market days that have occurred in the same villages on the same days for hundreds of years. Within a few minutes' drive, you will find half a dozen restaurants ranging from local specialties to highly recommended cuisine.

This home and this picturesque village make an ideal retreat for academics, artists who want to paint the Provence landscapes, writers, photographers. [Each bedroom has a writing table.] The owners are a photographer/professor and a writer.

Where in the world is Carcès? Carcès is an unspoiled village in the wine-producing region of Provence. Located half-way between Nice and Marseille just north of the A8 auto route, the village is about an hour and a half from Nice, Marseille, Arles, Avignon; an hour from St. Tropez and the Cote d'Azur, to Toulon or Hyeres to the south, an hour from the dramatic Gorge du Verdon to the north. In just 45 minutes, drive east to Aix-en-Provence to walk in the footsteps of Cezanne. Drive just two hours for lunch in Italy. Or, stay 'home.' Fishing out the back door; horseback riding down the road; biking in vineyards and through picturesque villages nearby; the Lac de Carcès is within hiking or biking distance.

Penny and I stayed in late April 2002. The house is charming, the pool inviting, the gardens are magnificent. The house itself is large, with a wonderful kitchen, and a huge antique dining table that invites lingering over dinner far into the evening. To stay in Carces is to step well off the beaten tourist track and into the daily life of a Provencal town. We shopped four our fruit, cheese, wine, pastries and vegatables every day. Some of our best memories are of meeting the merchants and farmers of Carces and the surrounding area. We're hoping to return soon!
We stayed 9 days. It is a charming, comfortable house located in the center of a wonderful little village. The house is in great condition and is roomy and airy. It is so picturesque that I even did a painting just looking out the window of my room at the rooftops and church bell tower on the town side. Out the back is a lovely green garden and pool and you can even hear the nearby waterfall when you are sitting on the terrace. All the necessary comforts and then some. 3 floors with a bathroom on each, and two of the guest bedrooms even have a sink for convenience. The house is much roomier than it looks from the street. Large rooms, good views, excellent kitchen with dw and gas stove. The townspeople are very friendly, and even tho I speak practically no French they were very helpful. Most spoke some English. I plan to rent it again and take a group of painters because it is perfect for that. We had six people and there was still room to spare. Enjoy! Also, it is very centrally located and easy to get to. We came in to Marseille airport and it was a breeze to find Carces following their directions.
The house is seductively pleasant. The rooms are flooded with light and the veranda in back, overlooking the nearby valley, was where we spent a lot of time eating, wine sampling, reading, and gabbing. Carces is pleasingly quiet but full of good shops and is centrally located for any tourist cities or villages.
This home and village was a once-in-a-lifetime experience as well as an adventure. It was a great contrast to the modern big city rapid lifestyle I usually lead. For those who need a change of pace and a long deserved sense of tranquility and harmony, this is the place for you. I found it enchanting and plan on returning.
